The North Western Kart Club hosted round three of the State Closed Series at the Highclere circuit today. The meeting would also decide the club titles.
We were greeted with fine sunny weather on our second visit to the Highclere circuit. Saturday's practice sessions resulted in good times. The kart was well balanced and with a good base setting to fall back on, we were able to experiment with different settings in the afternoon sessions. Sunday dawned fine and by the time of the first race the temperature had reached 20 degrees. The track was dry and clean and Robert was drawn eleventh grid position in the combined class race one. Robert found himself behind three drivers in the heavy class who were intent on fighting their own battle and found it difficult to make a clean pass. This caused him to lose two places after an unsuccessful passing maneuver. Repassing current state champion Steve Crocker was a higlight of the race and after working his way past the three heavies the Team Green Racing kart ended up in fourth position in the light class at the end of the eight laps, behind David Cramp, Lyn Cengia and Michael Jack.
Race two was started from ninth position, and half way through the first lap Robert had passed three karts. Unfortunately, after passing Steve Johnson on lap one into Tongs hairpin Steve made a kamikazee move into the next hairpin, hitting Robert in the back wheel and taking both of them out of the race. Robert tried to extricate the kart out of the woodchips, but it was hopelessly burried and he had to face the facts and retire. Chris Price drove well to win race two ahead of Glenn Radford with a fast finishing David Cramp taking third place.
The no finish in race two left us with a poor sixth grid position in the lights and thirteenth grid overall for the third heat. At the start, Robert started working his way through the field and was tucked in behind Paul Goodluck and Dale Madden when the two of them collided in the hairpin leading onto the start straight. Paul's kart was launched and flew over the top of Dale's kart, hitting Dale in the head on the way through. Robert avoided the accident, but the race was red flagged whilst the medical crews attended to Dale.
Luckily, he sustained only minor injuries and was able to compete in the clubman race later in the afternoon.
The race was rerun and Robert worked his through to fifth place at the end of the race. David Cramp again won ahead of Lyn Cengia with Chris Price third.
For the final, the over 40 lights ran separately from the heavies and again our race two retirement meant that Robert started from sixth place out of nine karts. Robert made a reasonable start but was pushed back one place by Michael Jack who slipped up the inside into turn one. Lacking straight line speed, Robert lined up a desperate on Michael under braking into Tongs hairpin on the first lap, but it was never going to work and instead of hitting Michael, Robert tried to back out of the maneuver but ended up having a half spin in the process.
At this stage, the clutch, which had received a huge caning in the woodchips in race two cried enough and started slipping. Robert carried on and ten seconds behind the rest of the field was only able to overtake Helen Gibson before race end.
David won the final from Chris with Steve taking third. David has won each of the three club titles so far this year and looks set to take out the state title and would definitely be favourite for the City of Launceston titles in May.
Team Green Racing's next race meeting attendance will be at the final round of the state series to be held at Archerville on 19 and 20 May.
