The Southern Tasmanian Kart Club hosted round one of the State Closed Series at the Orielton circuit today. The club titles were also up for grabs as part of the weekend's activities.

The state series is being held over four events this year, one at each of the state's circuits, with four heats being run at each event. Out of the sixteen races, fourteen count towards the title, and all four races count at the last round to be run at Archerville on 19 May.

Unfortunately, due to commitments made prior to the publication of the 2007 calendar, Team Green Racing is not competing at the second round in Smithton and consequently will not be in a position to challenge for the series win this year.

So for us the focus at each round this year will be the club title. The format is simple; first across the line in the final race of the day is the winner. Nevertheless, grid positions for the final are determined by results from the three heats, so finishing each race in as good a position as possible is vital.

After a slow start, Saturday's practice sessions resulted in good times and a well balanced kart. Robert admitted that the initial lack of speed was due to him and a bad bout of food poisoning on Friday rather than there being any problems with the kart' setup.

Sunday dawned fine and overcast and, although the strong winds last night threatened rain, the track was dry and clean. Robert was drawn eighth grid position for race one, putting him on the outside of the fourth row. A good start saw the Team Green Racing kart immediately move up one place and some decisive passing saw Robert move up to fourth at the end of the eight laps, behind Steve Crocker, Chris Price and Greg Hanson.

Race two was started from tenth position, and at the start Robert moved across to the inside and slotted in behind John Schofield into turn one. It looked a bit tight as all the karts funneled into the first turn and suddenly Robert was hit hard in the right-hand rear corner. The force of the impact speared him back across the track, fortunately without being hit by any of the other karts behind him. A quick flick turn saw the kart heading in the right direction, but the force of the impact had badly bent the axle and Robert was forced to limp back to the pits to retire. Steve Crocker had another win ahead of David Cramp and Dale Madden.

A quick axle change overseen by Rod between races saw us back on the grid, but the no finish in race two left us with a poor twelfth grid position for the third heat. At the start, Robert tucked in behind Dale Madden and the two of them worked their way through the field, with Dale finishing sixth and Robert seventh. Steve again won ahead of David with Chris third.

For the final, the over 40 lights ran separately from the heavies and again our race two retirement meant that Robert started from seventh place out of nine karts. Robert made a poor start and dropped a position to John Schofield before the first corner. They then ran nose to tail until late in the race when John made a pass on Terry Chadwick into turn one. Both karts touched and Robert backed off to avoid what seemed to be a certain accident. It didn't eventuate though and John opened up a gap which Robert was unable to close. This wasn't helped by some poor race craft as it took three attempts for Robert to make a pass stick on Terry.

Meanwhile at the front of the field a great dice was underway between Steve, David and Chris. Steve had opened a commanding early lead, but David and Chris closed up in the last third of the race. In the dicing, Steve made a mistake and with a little over a lap to go John was able to make a lunge for third.

That was the way it finished; David Cramp took out the Club title, with Chris Price second and John Schofield third. Robert, a little too far behind to make a move on Steve, ended a disappointing fifth.

Team Green Racing's next race meeting attendance will be at the third round of the state series at Highclere on 22 April.
