Saturday morning was the start of the serious action at the Tasmanian Kart Titles, with qualifying being held in the morning and the heats being run in the afternoon.
With the first qualifying session for the Over 40 Light class being the fourth session of the morning, Team Green Racing decided that the cool temperatures warranted higher tyre pressures in an attempt to find as much grip as possible. As each session is only four minutes in length, it is critical to get the tyres up to temperature within a couple of laps. The first session went well, with a best time of 41.385 seconds being achieved on lap 5. This put Robert in a provisional fifth on the grid, which is about where we had hoped to be given the quality of the opposition. For the second qualifying session, we dropped the tyre pressures by four pounds to allow for the warmer late morning temperatures. Unfortunately, the pressures were still too high, and the tyres quickly overheated. This was evidenced in the fact that Robert's best lap for the session was posted on lap two and at 41.468 seconds was in fact slower than his best lap from first qualifying and only good enough for seventh place in this session. The only other driver with a slower time in qualifying two was Dale Madden, but he had such a gap over the rest of the field from the first session that no-one was going to get near his provisional pole time. So, with grid positions determined by the drivers' best times from either session, the final qualifying positions for the two heats this afternoon are as follows: Pos No. Name Best Time 1 59 Dale Madden 40.639 2 40 David Cramp 40.834 3 60 David Reading 40.869 4 16 Steve Crocker 41.030 5 57 Peter Rogers 41.069 6 66 Robert Green 41.385 7 51 Chris Price 41.415 8 8 John Schofield 41.686 9 33 Terry Chadwick 41.742 10 80 Greg Hanson 41.907 11 75 Bill Bostock 43.584 |
