Team Green Racing arrived at the Southern Tasmanian Kart Club's Orielton circuit this morning for the first day of practice for this weekend's state titles. The day was fine but very windy, with quite a few of the pit tents succumbing to the gusts from the west.
The team's programme for the day was to establish a reasonable base setup on old tyres before switching to new tyres to confirm the setup and further fine tune the kart's handling. The day was almost immediately thrown into disarray when we had to strip down the rear axle for the scrutineers. There have been instances of DPE 30mm thin wall axles cracking through the keyways, and as a safety measure the scrutineers wanted to check all of these axles, which happened to include the axle fitted to the Team Green Racing kart. Consequently, we missed the first practice session whilst we reassembled the kart. When Robert went out in the second session he reported that there was lots of turn in oversteer, a condition we seem to be having a lot of trouble dialling out. A best time for the session of 42.16 was not particularly encouraging, so we decided to change to the new tyres for the next session to see if this alone improved the balance. Session three was our first time out on new tyres. "It is amazing how much more you can lean on the new tyres" reported Robert after the session. The kart was still a bit taily, but times dropped by 6/10ths of a second to a best of 41.56 seconds. At the post practice debrief, we decided that the rear axle was set too wide and that this was probably contributing to the oversteer. It was decided that the rear track would be reduced by ten millimetres for the next session. The final session for the day saw further improvements in our times, with Robert putting in a 41.23 second lap and reporting that the kart felt really good to drive, being far more balanced with the narrower track, although admittedly still a little taily through turn one. Tomorrow we will continue our programme, trying to evaluate a number of setup options and striving to achieve a good race setup for the finals on Sunday. |
