Today the Southern Tasmanian Kart Club held its first meeting on the revamped long track at Orielton, as a precursor to next week's state titles.
Today was also the race debut of our new race livery which is to be used for the state titles and the 2007 season. The day dawned cool and misty and by the time of the first heat a steady drizzle was falling, making the track slippery and treacherous. Team Green Racing opted to miss the first two heats as we do not have sufficient time before the state titles to undertake a full strip down and rebuild of the kart, which running in the wet entails. The last two races were held in the dry and we used these as an opportunity to test on the new track. In the first eight-lap run we had too low gearing and as a result we were about one second off the front- runners' pace. For race four we added three teeth to the rear sprocket and dropped the tyre pressures by one pound all round to allow for the longer race distance of fifteen laps. The new livery makes its race debut Driver Robert Green's times dropped by a full half second and it was encouraging to see that these times were able to be maintained right to the end of the fifteen-lap race. From twelfth and last on the grid, he was able to climb through to eighth at race end. Our goals for the day accomplished, we were able to pack up a clean and straight kart ready for the state titles next weekend. |
