Team Green Racing travelled out to the Archerville circuit for the Universal Joint/Archers Manor National Feature today. A fine and sunny morning greeted the team, but overnight rain had left the track very damp for the first race.
Grid positions for the first and second races were determined by draw and so Team Green Racing's Robert Green started the first race on the outside of row four in eighth place. Just like at the previous race meeting, Robert reported that the kart had plenty of grip and felt well balanced from the start. Taking full advantage of this, Robert passed four karts before the end of the first lap and was jostling for third place as he crossed the finish line for the first time. Still unsure of the grip levels in the wet and side-by-side through the first turn, Robert tried to give enough room to his competitor and in doing so clipped the inside curb with his back wheel. This threw the kart into a spin and Robert found himself staring at twelve karts bearing down on him. Unfortunately one of the karts was unable to avoid the stranded Team Green Racing machine and glanced off the right hand back wheel as it slid past. With a stalled motor and a bent axle, the remainder of race one was watched from the sidelines. Brilliant spanner work from Geoff and Zig meant that a new axle was installed before the start of race two. This time we started from eighth place with hotshots David Cramp and Rod Bender both behind. The race went well, and even though both David and Rod passed Robert we ended up with a sixth place and a new personal lap record of 41.58 seconds. The start of race two saw carnage at the first turn We started race three from twelfth position as a result of the DNF in race one. Robert again reported that the kart was well balanced, but this was only an initial impression because when arrived at the hairpin at the end of the main straight on lap one, the four karts immediately in front had a major coming together and virtually blocked the track. With nowhere to go, Robert glanced off one of the stricken karts and ended up in the woodchips on the outside of the corner; race over. Dale Madden ran away with the race two win; at this stage Robert is fifth We started the ten lap final in fifteenth position and with the temperatures dropping decided to increase the tyre pressures all round. This proved to be a mistake as the sun came back out during the warm up laps and consequently the tyres had overheated by lap five. A spin during an attempted overtaking manoeuvre on lap seven dropped Robert back to last, and a single pass near race end left us in fourteenth place in the combined light and heavy field. The National Over 40s light class was ultimately won by local driver David Cramp from the STKC's Dale Madden and with Chris Price taking third place. All in all it was a disappointing weekend for Team Green Racing, but glimpses of speed gave some encouragement to the team. The Launceston Kart Club is hoping to hold a Master's meeting in early October, and if this is confirmed it will be the next outing for Team Green Racing. |
