The final round of the Launceston Kart Club's 2006 Club series was held in cool and wet conditions today.
The track was damp for the first heat and we decided to use slicks as we thought the track may dry during the race. This was immediately found to be a mistake, as the four karts in front were all on wets and Robert found he had no grip whatsoever. He ended up being passed by three other karts on wets to finish the first race in eighth place. The track was also damp for race two, and not wanting to ruin a new set of wet tyres we again started with slicks. During the roll-up laps the heavens opened up and the track became soaked. The majority of the competitors fell off the track before the start and the race ended up being aborted to allow the scattered karts to be retrieved. The first start for race two was aborted Team Green Racing took the opportunity to change to wet tyres, and on wets for the first time ever we ventured into the unknown. Starting from second on the grid, Robert found the balance of the kart to be good and the grip offered by the wet tyres to be surprisingly good. Robert quickly took the lead, but was passed late in the race by Murray Dadson. Nevertheless, second place was an excellent result first time out in the rain. What most of the competitors saw of the Team Green Racing kart Race three was also held in very wet conditions, and Robert started the race from grid position five. After the problems with the kart stalling if the brakes locked, we had discussed the matter with engine builder Gyro and he suggested that we run a tiny amount of high jet and compensate by winding back the low slightly. We decided to try these settings in this race and found that the engine now idled quite well. The race itself went well, with Robert working his way through to second place by the end of the race, again behind Murray Dadson. Race four was the scratch race final and Robert started this race from sixth place on the grid. A solid race resulted in a third place finish behind the Leopard of Geordie Wicks and Murray Dadson. Race four saw Robert pass four karts on the way to third The final race of the day was the handicap race and Robert started from fourth on the grid. The track was still soaking wet, and it soon became obvious that the gaps to the drivers in front would be difficult to overcome. Robert was passed by Geordie Wicks and one of the competitors in front fell off the road. With one lap to go, Robert was closing quickly on Geoff Warren, but also had Murray Dadson closing quickly on him. Robert made a desperate lunge at Geoff into the turn five hairpin, but found the space disappear as Geoff took his line into the corner. Trying to back out of the manoeuvre Robert had a half spin, and unfortunately left Murray with nowhere to go. The resulting collision put Murray out of the race, but the changes to the carburettor jetting meant that the engine on our kart did not stall and Robert was able to recover to finish the race in fourth place. Geordie Wicks took full advantage of the superior performance of his Leopard to be the overall winner for the day. Team Green Racing's Robert Green and Geoff Warren finished the day on equal second. Given that this was the team's first meeting in wet conditions, we are obviously ecstatic with the result. Now we await the final results for the series, which hopefully will be published in the next week. |
