Team Green Racing was greeted with a frost at the Archerville track for the third round of the Club series today. The track was dry and clean, but of course cold.
Still on a provisional licence, Robert Green started the first race from the rear of the grid. "I drove like a goat" reported Robert at the end of the race, in which he only managed to overtake one kart. When the team reviewed the times, however, a fastest lap of 41.65 seconds was only 1/100th of a second off our best time to date. Encouraged by the lap times, we looked forward to the second race of the day, in which Robert was allotted fifth place on the grid. A good start and laps consistently in the 41.7 second range meant that Robert quickly progressed to third place. Maybe this led to overconfidence, but on lap seven, while chasing down the second place driver, Robert tried to take turn six flat out and next thing he knew he was travelling off the track backwards. So a DNF was a disappointing way to end what had been our best race so far. Race three saw Robert start from eighth on the grid. Battling through traffic for five of the eight laps meant that the lap times were not the best, but once clear on lap six he immediately put down a 41.62 second lap and finished the race in sixth place. Robert reported that the kart felt balanced and was consistent throughout the race. Robert started the scratch race final from seventh place on the grid. On lap two coming into the hairpin turn six, the two karts in front slowed more than anticipated and Robert overreacted, locked the rear brakes and again the motor stalled. The final race of the day was the handicap race and due to the rather fraught day so far, Robert started from second on the grid. He took the lead on the first lap and quickly established a good gap over the rest of the field. Maintaining consistent lap times in the low 42 second bracket was all that was needed to secure Team Green Racing's first win and was a great way to finish off our second race meeting. Driving conservatively for our first race win Matthew Freeman was the overall winner for the day, followed by Steve Armitage with Daniel Austin third. Murray Dadson now leads the series by five points from Geoff Warren. Team Green Racing's Robert Green has jumped from thirteenth to eighth position in the points after the win in the handicap race. The final race in the series will be held on 30 July 2006, but before then we travel to Hobart to compete in the Castrol Cup, the final race on the Orielton track before a major upgrade takes place and our first open race meeting. |
