The third test was held today at the Archerville track. Again the day was cool and sunny, and the track was cold.
Today was our first attempt at trying setup changes on the kart. The changes were limited to experimenting with different tyre pressures and changes to the gearing, as the motor has not been running out to maximum revs in previous tests. We started with the same settings that we used in test two, and managed a 41.75 second lap at the end of the first eight lap session. The kart was still suffering from turn-in oversteer, but the cleaner track probably accounted for the 3/10ths of a second gain over the best time achieved in test day two. For session two, we dropped the tyre pressures by one pound all round and more significantly changed the rear sprocket from a 74 to a 76 (the largest one we currently have) and our driver Robert immediately reported extra punch out of the low speed corners. This showed in the lap times, with a 15/100th of a second gain on the tight sector three and an overall improvement of the lap time to 41.67 seconds. For session three we dropped the tyre pressures by another pound all round, but found that this was a backward step. We used session four to test the kart with the seat stays removed. Robert quickly found that with the stays out the kart had poor grip and drive out of the corners and consequently the seat stays were immediately reinstalled. Overall, the day was a success and now Team Green Racing looks forward to its first race, round two of the LKC club series which is to be held on 28 May 2006. |
